Hello Chaotic Reading friends!
Welcome to the Friday Weekly Wrap up. As we transition into spooky season, I hope you’re enjoying yourselves. I’m not the biggest Halloween girlie out there, so the biggest fright you’ll get here is my lack of spooky spirit. Here’s what I’m working on in my little corner of the world.
What I’m reading:
Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki.
I’d be interested to hear what other folks thought of this.1 I’m enjoying it so far, but I think it has 50% too much plot. As in, there are 2 plots, and it could do without one of them. It’s set in Central California, which made me think of Afterparties by the late Anthony Veasna So, an excellent short story collection if you haven’t read it.
The second plot in Light From Uncommon Stars takes place in a donut shop, and the first story in Afterparties *also* takes place in a donut shop, both in Central California. Afterparties is concerned with the Cambodian diaspora experience after the autogenocide of the Khmer Rouge, and Light From Uncommon Stars is…not that, but I was delighted all the same to realize I had cultural and contextual background from another book. I was basically this meme:
What I’m writing:
My novel! How exciting. I have a solid plan for the first 4 chapters of my book, and this week, I started editing Chapter 4. A view into the writing process:
What I’m listening to:
As mentioned, I’m not as big of a Halloween girlie. However, I have been enjoying this 90s Whimsigothic playlist on Spotify. Perfect vibes, and helped me learn the names of some classic songs I knew by ear.
Mug Moment of the week:
Featuring my morning tea and chaotic kitchen. Mug is from a small village in France called Aubterre sur Dronne. Friend of the pod2 Chris, aka my brother, got me this mug when he was in France for a friend’s wedding last year. The individual artist is Serge Cousseran, who does not appear to have any kind of socials that I can tag. Very chic, very me, and I appreciated it very much.
That’s it for this week! I’m spending the weekend looking after some very silly dogs. See you on Tuesday for more bookish content.
If you’ve read it, that is.
Always wanted to say that.
